Description de l'unité

This job opening is offered by the LS2PR Laboratory (Signals, Protocols, and Radio Platforms) within LETI's Systems Division in Grenoble. The 21-strong team of permanent researchers conducts cutting-edge research in advanced wireless systems and their implementation on embedded electronic devices.
The laboratory's research spans:

• Radio physical layer design (waveform definition and signal processing),
• Inter-layer protocols (spectrum access, networking),
• Resource optimization and orchestration for communication, computation, and control in networks,
• Connectivity architecture definition, and
• Radio localization and detection.

LS2PR also specializes in prototyping advanced radio solutions, including digital signal processing validation on hardware platforms, as well as demonstrations and proofs of concept. Complementing these activities, the lab maintains a strong publication and IP portfolio, averaging 40 publications and 10 patents annually.

Description de l'offre

In the context of ongoing transformations of wireless technologies, the laboratory LS2PR investigates innovative network topologies and digital signal processing schemes.

On the one hand, novel network topologies based on distributed MIMO, formerly referred to as cell-free massive MIMO aim to provide spatially homogeneous capacity compared with traditional architectures; however, it also introduces significant challenges, such as computationally- and energy-efficient precoding schemes and synchronization of radio access points (APs). On the other hand, the laboratory develops dedicated waveforms targeting spectrum bands above 140 GHz. These frequency ranges are envisioned for very high-data-rate point-to-point links (x-haul) and/or joint communication and sensing applications. In both cases, the main challenges stem from the implementation of RF front ends, which are highly susceptible to severe impairments such as high phase noise, limited DAC/ADC resolution. On both topics, LS2PR has strong foundations in waveform design and advanced signal processing. In particular, energy-efficient precoding algorithms have been developed for distributed MIMO systems and are currently validated through numerical simulations. Similar efforts have been carried out to mitigate high phase noise in sub-THz transmissions.

Building on these existing results, the proposed position aims to set up a testbench for hardware-in-the-loop validation of waveforms and signal processing algorithms. The work will initially focus on distributed MIMO, with sub-THz waveforms addressed in a second phase. The prototyping methodology will rely on interfacing Python/Matlab signal-processing chains with high-end HW platforms based on ARM/Xilinx SoCs, such as RFSoCs, used for signal generation and acquisition.

For distributed MIMO, the work will involve implementing advanced precoding schemes across multiple access points and evaluating their performance— in terms of throughput and capacity—while accounting for energy efficiency. For sub-THz waveforms validation, the testbench will also integrate a CEA leading-edge RF platform operating at 140 GHz, amenable to perform over-the-air (OTA) validation.

The projects benefit from a dynamic ecosystem in France and abroard, leveraging fundings from "France 2030" and Europena SNS-JU research programs.

The offer proposes to tackle the following tasks :
- Adapt and enhance existing HW setups based on Wilinx RFSoCs
- Adapt, enhance and hook existing simulation chains to hardware components, aiming at near real-time operation.
- Contribute to the integration of RF components for OTA operation
- Conduct experimental measurment campaigns and compare the results with published reference works.
- Ensure the protection of innovative results though the filing of patents.
- Contribute to the dissemination of scientific results through journal and/or conferences articles.
- Contribution to project deliverables and demonstrators.

Profil du candidat

  • The candidate must have a strong knowledge in digital signal processing for wireless communications (minmum Master of Science, preferably Ph.D in a related field).
  • A solid experience in programming digital signal processing algorithms using Python or Matlab is required. Experience in hardware prototyping on ARM/Xilinx system-on-chips would be a major asset.
  • Past and/or ongoing scientific dissemination activities, or experience in protecting intellectual property through patent filings would be a plus.
