Located in Grenoble, capital of the Alp, CEA-LETI is at the heart of the Minatec campus : An international hub for micro and nanotechnology research. The MINATEC innovation campus is home to 2,400 researchers, 1,200 students, and 600 business and technology transfer experts. By bringing together experts from higher education, research, and industry on a single site, MINATEC offers a unique innovation ecosystem with the shared technology platforms and expertise. According to Forbes magazine, Grenoble is ranked fifth most innovative city in the world.
LETI has a long experience in wireless system, circuit design and technology development for a wide range of applications for various customers. Among numerous results, these collaborations have enabled us to develop probably the more precise localization system based on UltraWideband. More recently, the first Ultra-NarrowBand compatible receiver enabling ultra low power ultra-low cost IoT devices has been implemented, paving the way for new IoT applications. In parallel, the developed PD-SOI technology has enabled to derive high performances switches, which justify today the success of PD-SOI in the mobile market. The FD-SOI technology is also a great success transferred to ST, Samsung and Global Foundries. Today, the 3D technology knows an increased interest in imaging application.

Job description

The development of 5G systems together with the emergence of a multitude of new IoT applications leads to the needs of various new devices such as Gbit/s low power wireless link, sub mm precision radar system or power efficient imagers with embedded classification. However, at the same time, the exponential growth of the cost of advanced sub-micron technologies limits the number of company mastering sub 7nm process as well as the application range of these technologies.
To circumvent this evolution a wide variety of dedicated technologies are developed to answer specific application constraints. As an example, PD-SOI technologies are facing a great success in the front-end module due to the outstanding performance of the switch. 3D technologies are an interesting approach to increase the density of the chip as well as to aggregate the characteristics of two different layers as in the imaging market.
The optimal development of such technologies is challenging since it should bring significant improvement to the developed system in order to justify the additional cost. A careful joint optimization between the technology and the RF architecture are therefore mandatory to extract the best from the technologies. At the same time, the innovation in design techniques and system architecture is becoming more and more significant and important, making the mastering of the systems more and more complex. There is therefore a need to setup a new design methodology creating the link between the silicon systems and technologies.

Applicant Profile

A new system optimization approach has been proposed and evaluated in LETI both at the technology and system level, it is based on advanced mathematical approaches. The objective of this contract is to validate and improve this technique on different application areas. For that purpose, the candidate will be jointly working with numerous teams working on technology development, technology modeling and characterization, circuit design and lastly system modeling.
To validate the proposed approach, the objective of the candidate will be to test it on three different levels: at basic building block level (lna, ring oscillator) using 22 FDX technology, at function level (front-end module for WiFi) using 130nm PD-SOI and lastly for imagers and mmw radars using 3D technology.
As a first step, it will be necessary to identify the objective for each level and to define the optimization criteria and the parameters, which need to be taken into account. The candidate will, then, be in charge of creating the architectural model taking into account the different solutions that can be used, starting from the simplest implementation and then adding gradually complexity and precision to the models. The objective will be to confront the results obtain according to the new models and the simulation results. Another collaborator will be in charge of the development of the models of the technology which will be exploited in the architecture description.
The final goal being to reach interesting comparison between different strategical approaches, alternatives at technology or at architecture level. The candidate will have to understand and capitalize from the different teams the design methodologies as well as the technology characteristics. He ought to demonstrate a high initiative level to orientate the work and the system methodology. The candidate should feel confident with at least some of the following areas: technology characteristics, circuit design, system design, mathematical tools and python software, knowing that he will be collaborating with different experts in each of these areas. Above all, he should be comfortable in team working since he will have to collect data and feedback from many different collaborators, as any expert system designers.
