The CEA's Laboratory for Innovation in New Energy Technologies and Nanomaterials (LITEN) is one of the most important research centers in Europe for new energy technologies. Within LITEN, the Thermal, Conversion and Hydrogen Technologies Department (DTCH) is responsible for the development of the hydrogen and fuel cell sectors, studying energy or fuel production processes as well as exploring and promoting innovative and efficient uses of heat. Within DTCH, the Laboratory of Energy Systems for Territories (LSET) develops software tools to evaluate and optimize multi-vector energy systems (hydrogen, heat, gas, electricity), and carries out assessment studies of these energy systems for territories and industry.

Do you want your research to have a real impact on the energy transition? Then CEA-Liten is the ideal place for a post-doctoral position.
Our teams (1,000 people) are working with our industrial partners to develop the innovative solutions of tomorrow.
Your role? to give birth to the innovations of the day after tomorrow.

Due to their inherent ability to integrate renewable and waste energies efficiently, urban thermal networks are key systems for any policies aiming at limiting global warming. With the increase in space cooling demands, expected to be multiplied by 1.6 from 2016 to 2050 in Europe, urban areas energy systems must evolve. Even though individual reversible heat pumps present some advantages (modularity, resilience to variations of heat to cold demand ratio), a generalization of their development induces numerous issues: low efficiency of air as thermodynamic source, increased stress on the electrical grid, enhancement of urban heat island phenomenon, architectural integration, etc. In this context and in the frame of smart energy systems development, i.e. systems taking advantage of positive synergies between energy carriers, the concept of 5th generation district heating and cooling systems has been introduced (5GDHC). These systems are able to ensure heat and cold demands with high spatial and temporal variability by making use of a set of hydraulic pumps and a network operating close to ambient temperature, which offers a high quality thermodynamic source to a set of distributed thermodynamic machines (heat pumps and/or chillers).
This new type of urban network presents a multi-dimensional complexity (design, sizing, control) with a high potential for innovation. The main objective here is to address the operational control optimization aspect by proposing, implementing and testing innovative control of 5GDHC system in a virtual environment (extensive description of the subject).


What you will do

  • Use a state-of-the-art modeling tool to create a simple yet generic model of an innovative 5th generation district heating and cooling network,
  • Formulate, implement and test a model predictive control for this network,
  • Participate to conferences and publish your work, possibly after having patented it.

Profil du candidat

You have a PhD in optimization and/or simulation of energy systems and have skills in scientific programming. You are fluent in English. Some basic knowledge of French would be beneficial You bring creativity, enjoy teamwork and can undertake research projects autonomously.
