The CEA's Laboratory for Innovation in New Energy Technologies and Nanomaterials (LITEN) is one of the most important research centers in Europe for new energy technologies.

Within LITEN, the Thermal, Conversion and Hydrogen Technologies Department is responsible for the development of the hydrogen and fuel cell sectors, studying energy or fuel production processes as well as exploring and promoting innovative and efficient uses of heat.

You will work in our Energy Systems for Territories and Industry Department, in the Energy Systems for Territories Laboratory (LSET), which develops software tools to evaluate and optimize multi-vector energy systems (hydrogen, heat, gas, electricity), and carries out assessment studies of these energy systems for territories and industry.

Located in Grenoble and in Le Bourget du Lac the laboratory is recognized for its expertise in complex systems analysis and energy networks optimization.

 In the context of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, the CEA has initiated a project in 2021 to assess the relevance of coupling a nuclear power system with a direct atmospheric carbon capture device (DAC) thanks to the use of the system's waste heat.

Meanwhile, a study has been initiated to evaluate the potential of a "CO2 refinery" that would produce synthetic fuel for aviation (SAF) from low-carbon electricity sources (renewables and nuclear). These preliminary evaluations have led to the conclusion that it would be worthwhile to evaluate the feasibility of a facility coupling both of the aforementioned processes by carrying a techno-economic study.

 As a member of a team of about twenty experts(energy system evaluation, techno-economic engineering, energy system modeling, optimization and computer programming), you will participate in a research project on the modeling and evaluation of a CO2 refinery dedicated to the production of Jet Fuel fed by a nuclear reactor and coupled with an atmospheric CO2 capture process. Your missions will consist in:

 

- Conducting a literature review on emerging Power to x technologies in the field of the targeted molecules of interest

- Select the most relevant conversion pathways to be studied

- Carry out the modeling and thermal integration of the processes using process simulation softwares

- Integrate the coupling of a small and modular nuclear reactor with a solar thermal field and a CO2 capture process in the modeling

- Perform technical, economic and environmental assessments of the solutions

- Contribute to the scientific and technical outreach of the laboratory by writing scientific papers and/or patents

 

The position will be based in Grenoble.

 

Profil du candidat

Engineer or doctor in process and chemical engineering, you have a solid knowledge of petrochemical processes modeling (synthesis gas, hydrocarbon intermediates, refinery, fischer-tropsch synthesis). You master process modeling software (Aspen Plus, ProSimPlus or equivalent).

 You are creative, enjoy working in a team and have a real capacity to adapt.

 You are fluent in English, some basic knowledge of French would be beneficial.
