Division description

CEA-Leti, the Laboratory for Electronics & Information Technology is operated by the technological research division at CEA. CEA-Leti benefits from 8000 m2 state-of-the-art clean rooms, with pieces of equipment worth some 160 million euros. It is currently employing about 1600 people among whom CEA employees co-workers of various status, including 100 people from industrial partners. CEA has a very important patents portfolio and an active scientific dissemination policy, with more than 200 filed patents and 700 publications per year.

Description de l'unité

The mission of the Wireless Department of CEA-Leti is to carry out research, studies and development in the field of wireless communications. Its focus is to define and test signal processing algorithms, propose innovative communications protocols for future wireless communication systems along with innovative RF transceiver solution and smart antenna systems. It is therefore responsible for designing digital architectures and validation hardware platforms for the most innovative wireless concepts, integrating antenna systems, radiofrequency front-ends, digital electronic cards using programmable and / or reconfigurable components and software implementing network protocols.
The department skills cover radio frequency communication systems, including cellular technologies 5G, Beyond 5G and 6G, broadband systems and low power long range communications and satellite technologies, short range and high speed wireless optical communications systems (LiFi). More generally, the department has expertise in the physical (PHY), medium access (MAC) and radio resource management layers of these systems as well as their efficient implementation, particularly in terms of energy consumption, in components and hardware platforms using the most popular and most advanced micro-electronic technologies. These components include reconfigurable antenna systems, low power RF and analog circuits, reconfigurable digital circuits (FPGAs), and ASIC circuits (mixed analog / digital).

Job description

Communication systems and networks have recently undergone a massive change in the way they provide their services. The advent of “Network softwarization” and virtualization have led to replace non-dynamic protocols and hardware devices by adaptive monitoring and control software on highly programmable devices that transport and/or process network traffic to provide new features such as slicing, edge cloud networking, and reliability improvement.

To strengthen its research team, the wireless department is looking for a senior researcher in advanced wireless communications to support and lead research on these new key enabling techniques for future 6G communications, particularly for Machine-type- and or energy efficient communication applications.

The senior researcher is foreseen to carry out the following non-exhaustive work:

  • Perform cutting-edge research in the domain of network control and optimization.
  • Design new mechanisms and algorithms for network scheduling, optimization and control including protocol optimization and flexible approaches based on deep-learning mechanisms
  • Implement proof of concepts of designed mechanisms and algorithms in simulation or small-scale real world networks
  • Validate the research through adequate quantitative measurements in a statistically meaningful manner
  • Tightly collaborate with wireless department colleagues, as well as with other Leti’s teams where appropriate
  • Proactively participate in setting-up national and European funded research projects, and collaborating with research partners from industry.

In this context, the senior researcher will set up flexible proposals for both software and hardware architectures to meet new wireless network challenges. Simulation tools for wireless networks will validate the new concepts. Demonstrators will also be developed to validate the most promising concepts in the field. The results will be disseminated in scientific publications, patents and could possibly be transferred to our industrial partners.

Applicant Profile

• Holder of a PhD degree in Engineering, preferably Computer Science or Electrical Engineering.
• Strong background in wireless communications particularly at layer L2 and L3, understanding of current orchestration mechanisms and proposal of future trends (MEC, Slicing, Network softwarization).
• Strong interest in leading research and developing new ideas in network orchestration and management
• Analytical skills for designing and implementing abstract models and algorithms.
• Programming skills and ability to adapt to particular language or environment (C/C++, Python, Java, …)
• Team player and strong communication skills.
