Description de l'unité

The IRFM (Institut de Recherche sur la Fusion par confinement Magnétique) belongs to the CEA Physical Science Division and is located in the CEA Cadarache Centre, south of France. More than 300 people carry out researches in order to produce a new source of energy: the magnetic confinement fusion. The IRFM activities are structured around three main areas:
Contribution to the implementation of the ITER project,
Preparation the scientific operation of ITER, through controlling and experimentation activities, and through theory and modelling,
Establishment of the bases for future fusion reactors.
The IRFM is equipped with several R&D platforms, the best known is the Tore Supra tokamak which is becoming WEST (W – tungsten Environment Steady-state Tokamak) to test the ITER divertor.

Description de l'offre

The retained candidate will be recruited by the IRFM but his activities will be undertaken at the Saclay tritium laboratory of the JOLIOT Institute. The IRFM is deeply involved in the implementation of ITER. Among all the activities, tritium studies are of major importance due to their implication on the ITER safety. They are undertaken, under the IRFM leadership, at the Saclay tritium laboratory.
Today, we deal with different scientific studies:
measurement of the kinetic of tritium desorption from different ITER relevant materials such as cement, steel, plastic …
toxicity evaluation of different dust material as cement or steel will be studied. These experiments rely on the design and production of relevant dust particles, on their tritiation and on the study of the behavior of the embedded tritium when introduced in biological media.
Development of different new and innovative tritium diagnostics as Laser Induced Breakdown Spectrocopy or Nuclear Reaction Method using 3He beam that can both provide a tritium depth profile in materials. These two techniques rely again on the tritiation of the related materials.
Experimental studies and modelling of tritium trapping in massive materials.
All these activities rely upon experimental studies dedicated to the tritiation of different massive and dust materials and on fundamental analysis of the kinetic of tritium absorption/desorption in/from those materials. Tritiation experiments of materials and the characterization of tritiated products are a key point for the relevancy of the activities.
Under the co-mentoring of IRFM and JOLIOT, the candidate will be responsible for the materials tritiation. He will also be in charge of all the related scientific analysis on the kinetic of tritium absorption/desorption. This includes data analysis but also the assessment of the physical processes governing tritium trapping in materials. Modelling of the observed experiments will be also part of his work and he can rely of IRFM existing models that must be improved.
The candidate will have to manage a team of technician and students.
Moreover, the candidate will have to collaborate with a large number of European contributors.

Profil du candidat

The applicant should have completed a PhD in material sciences.
Experiences in some or all the following fields will be an asset during the position:
Nuclear material science
Surface science
