The condensed matter physics division (SPEC) of CEA-Saclay (France) is a joint CEA-CNRS research unit with about 160 people. Research themes range from quantum physics to functionl materials and complex systems. The LENSIS laboratory in SPEC has a long experience in photoelectron spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation and laboratory light sources. In addition, it is internationally recognized for its work in LEEM and PEEM electron imaging. Current research themes cover ferroelectric oxide electronic structure, surface and interface chemistry and 2D materials. Using fundamental physics to understand key problems in materials development for applications is a key part of the laboratory motivation.

The Condensed Matter Division (Service de Physique de l’Etat Condensé – SPEC UMR3680 CEA, CNRS) of the French Atomic Energy and Alternative Energy Authority’s IRAMIS institute offers a full time career position for a young research scientist to develop its research programme on the electronic and chemical structure of functional oxide surfaces and interfaces for low power electronics.
The successful candidate will join the LENSIS laboratory in the CEA centre of the Paris Saclay University campus near Paris. The laboratory is specialized in the use of electron and photoelectron spectroscopy techniques, including UPS, XPS, Hard X-ray photoemission, PEEM, LEEM. Laboratory experiments are complemented by extensive use of synchrotron radiation, in particular the Soleil synchrotron in France and the Elettra synchrotron in Italy. More recently, we have also started exploiting laser sources for photoelectron spectroscopy.
Our research focuses on the physical phenomena at work at the surface and interfaces of oxide based heterostructures, in particular ferroelectrics and 2D materials. We have strong national and international collaborations with both fundamental and technological research laboratories, including the Peter Grünberg Institute (Jülich, Germany), NaMLab (Dresden, Germany), ISMO and Aimé Cotton (Paris Saclay), CEA DRT/Léti (Grenoble), the Central school (Lyon), ST Microelectronics (Crolles) and the AFRL (Dayton, OH, USA). Our research themes are motivated by possible applications and often involve multilateral collaborations funded, for example, by the European Commission, as in the case of the recent 3eFERRO project on ferroelectric HfO2.
The successful candidate will supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students, take part in drawing up scientific projects and funding requests, work on instrumental innovation in collaboration with technical staff and will be expected to develop his or her own research themes within the overall existing orientation of the laboratory. A convincing capacity for collaborative research and the associated human qualities are requested for such a profile.
Profil du candidat
Candidates should have a PhD in physics and one or more year’s post-doc experience in surface science and photoelectron spectroscopy and have a sound understanding of the electronic structure of solids. Synchrotron radiation experience and knowledge of ferroelectric materials will be an advantage. Availability for several synchrotron radiation campaigns is mandatory.
Preferred start date is September 12th 2022.
