General information
Organisation
The French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) is a key player in research, development and innovation in four main areas :
• defence and security,
• nuclear energy (fission and fusion),
• technological research for industry,
• fundamental research in the physical sciences and life sciences.
Drawing on its widely acknowledged expertise, and thanks to its 16000 technicians, engineers, researchers and staff, the CEA actively participates in collaborative projects with a large number of academic and industrial partners.
The CEA is established in ten centers spread throughout France

Job title
Development of a sensor platform for multimodal Camera/RADAR perception assisted by AI H/F
Subject
The goal of the internship is to participate in the implementation of a sensor platform composed of a camera and an FMCW RADAR. This sensor platform aims to produce a multimodal dataset combining RADAR and camera data. In various fields such as autonomous driving, robotics, or assistive technologies for people, RADAR is gaining increasing interest due to its complementarity with cameras, allowing it to compensate for some of their limitations.
The internship will involve:
- Understanding the various sensors.
- Implementing a calibration algorithm using AI-based methods.
- Adopting a rigorous scientific approach to validate the relevance of the proposed algorithms.
This platform will enable the generation of a database using both modalities for detecting human behaviors. This dataset will then be used to develop algorithms leveraging both modalities to improve the results of existing methods.

Job description
The Direction de la Recherche Technologique(DRT) of the CEA has the mission to develop innovative solutions and interact with industrial stakeholders to valorize these technologies. The LIIIM laboratory (Integrated Multi-Sensor Intelligence) has expertise in environment perception through its knowledge of various sensors (camera, LiDAR, RADAR, infrared) applied to fields such as automotive, robotics, and drones.
Within a multidisciplinary team of engineer-researchers, the candidate will be required to:
- Participate in the implementation of a sensor platform combining RADAR and a camera.
- Contribute to the development of tools for AI-based calibration.
- Evaluate the relevance of the results obtained.
This work will enable the creation of a multimodal RADAR/camera dataset for detecting human movements or gestures. In collaboration with the team's researchers, the candidate will develop AI algorithms for calibration, taking into account the specificities of the data from each sensor. They will need to demonstrate a critical mindset and implement tools to assess the quality of the proposed solutions.
In a second phase, the candidate will participate in the creation of the dataset. Finally, they will highlight the benefits of the dual RADAR/camera modality, work that could be the subject of a scientific publication.
