General information

CEA (logo)

Organisation

The French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) is a key player in research, development and innovation in four main areas :
• defence and security,
• nuclear energy (fission and fusion),
• technological research for industry,
• fundamental research in the physical sciences and life sciences.

Drawing on its widely acknowledged expertise, and thanks to its 16000 technicians, engineers, researchers and staff, the CEA actively participates in collaborative projects with a large number of academic and industrial partners.

The CEA is established in ten centers spread throughout France

Job title

High-data rate 2.4 GHz Backscattering communication for BCI application

Subject

The internship focuses on developing innovative 2.4 GHz backscattering architectures with magnetic coupling for Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI). The goal is to optimize communication architectures that minimize thermal dissipation, reduce radio interference, and achieve high data rates. This work aims to create more sustainable and less invasive communication technologies for BCI applications.

Contract duration (months)

[3 to 6 months]

Job description

Brain Computer Interface allows direct communication link between the brain's electrical activity and an external device, most commonly a computer or a robotic prosthesis. BCI is today used for research on the brain, mitigating neurodegenerative diseases, and restoring sensory-motor functions. Years ago CEA pioneered BCI with cable-based interface. Contactless and batteryless interface is now required to increase the number of connections, and ease the set up of the interface.

In this context, the internship aims to explore and develop innovative 2.4 GHz backscattering architectures with magnetic coupling, in the context of BCI. The objective is to study and optimize communication architectures that minimize thermal dissipation, reduce radio interference, achieve data rates of over 10 Mbps, while ensuring sufficient efficiency to replace traditional radio links, which are highly energy-intensive. This project will include an in-depth literature review to identify the most promising architectures, followed by a modeling and system study phase. The final goal is to define the specifications of an integrated circuit that meets technical constraints while optimizing energy efficiency and sustainability. By integrating eco-innovation principles, this internship will contribute to developing more virtuous and less invasive communication technologies for BCI applications
