Description de l'unité
Based mainly in Grenoble and Chambéry, the Laboratory for Innovation in New Energy Technologies and Nanomaterials (Liten) is a major European research player fully dedicated to new energy technologies.
The Thermal Conversion and Hydrogen Department
The Hydrogen Technologies Service is tasked with developing high-temperature steam electrolysis technology to produce hydrogen with high efficiency and low cost, and with exploiting the specific features of this technology, namely being able to operate in the opposite mode, as a fuel cell, to produce electricity and heat from various fuels, notably carbon- and/or nitrogen-based, and also to co-electrolyze steam and CO2 to produce H2/CO syngas, later turned into molecules of interest or synthetic fuel. Its activities support the development of the hydrogen sector for stationary applications, enabling in particular the storage of renewable energies and the decarbonation of industry.
You have the opportunity to contribute to the mission of the Stack Design and Manufacturing Laboratory: developing components and systems for hydrogen production by high-temperature electrolysis and high-temperature fuel cells.

Description de l'offre
The goal of this interniship is to use numerically advanced strategies for the calibration of our 3D multiphysics COMSOL models of Solid-Oxide-Electrolyzer-Cells (SOEC). Our current SOEC models involve different coupled physical phenomena such as electrochemical, thermal, fluidics and radiative processes. These phenomena are described by dedicated physical models, whose parameters requires careful calibration against targeted experimental data. The proposed methodology will use innovative Optimal Experimental Design (OED) strategies to address parameter correlation and identifiability issues during model calibration. The method, will consider the following steps:
1.identify operating conditions for which different physical mechanisms are expected to dominate (e.g., low current --> activation losses dominate)
2.Global screening inside these regimes to reduce the number of important parameters
3.apply OED and Fisher Information Matrix (FIM) criteria to identify experimental conditions that minimize parameter correlations.
A COMSOL model of the a SOEC cell setup operating both in steady (IV-curve) and dynamical (EIS) conditions will be developed during the stage. The model will be used to numerically reproduce experimental conditions that allow maximizing the sensitivity to the different model’s parameters. The student will be able to learn an advanced calibration strategy that can be applied to any complex 3D FEM model, potentially involving several multiphysics and non-linear coupling."
