General information
Organisation
The French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) is a key player in research, development and innovation in four main areas :
• defence and security,
• nuclear energy (fission and fusion),
• technological research for industry,
• fundamental research in the physical sciences and life sciences.
Drawing on its widely acknowledged expertise, and thanks to its 16000 technicians, engineers, researchers and staff, the CEA actively participates in collaborative projects with a large number of academic and industrial partners.
The CEA is established in ten centers spread throughout France

Development of Electron Tomography to Reveal the 3D Nanostructure of Next-Generation PFAS-Free Electrodes for Green Hydrogen and Fuel Cells
Contract duration (months)
6 months
Job description
Objective: By providing the first 3D images of PFAS-free ionomer distribution in electrodes, your work will give manufacturers the key insights needed to build high-performance, eco-friendly electrodes.
Context: Water electrolysers and fuel cells are key technologies for the green energy transition. To reduce environmental impact, the current perfluorinated PFAS-type ionomers used in these systems are being replaced by fluorine-free alternatives, particularly in electrodes (nanoporous materials composed of a catalyst and an ionomer). However, PFAS-free electrodes currently exhibit lower performance, likely due to unknown differences in their 3D ionomer distribution. Building on our group's pioneering work in using electron tomography to characterize the 3D distribution of ionomer in electrodes, this internship aims to advance this cutting-edge methodology to visualize PFAS-free ionomers and guide electrode design.
Your main responsibilities will include:
• Data Acquisition: Participating in electron tomography acquisitions led by our team to gain a comprehensive understanding of the characterization process.
• 3D Image Processing & Analysis: Actively contributing to 3D image reconstruction, segmentation, and quantitative analysis.
• Method Optimization & Automation: Developing strategies to optimize and automate image processing steps to enhance image quality and speed up data analysis.
