Organisation

The French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) is a key player in research, development and innovation in four main areas :
• defence and security,
• nuclear energy (fission and fusion),
• technological research for industry,
• fundamental research in the physical sciences and life sciences.

Drawing on its widely acknowledged expertise, and thanks to its 16000 technicians, engineers, researchers and staff, the CEA actively participates in collaborative projects with a large number of academic and industrial partners.

The CEA is established in ten centers spread throughout France

Description de l'unité

Located on the Saclay Plateau in the Paris region, CEA List is renowned for its expertise in the field of ionizing radiation measurement, with applications in the industrial, nuclear, and security sectors. To achieve this, CEA List relies on advancements in instrumentation, signal processing methods, and the development of digital tools.
In the context of creating innovative non-destructive testing methods, CEA has implemented robotic tomography platforms at its Nantes and Saclay sites. These platforms feature a system equipped with two robotic arms, fitted with an X-ray tube and a detector, respectively. They enable high-precision 2D and 3D acquisitions with enhanced flexibility, as well as the development of tailored image processing algorithms. Currently, only X-ray absorption imaging is available.

Job title

X-Ray Phase-Contrast Imaging: Evaluation of Robotized Inspection (M/F)

Subject

This internship aims to evaluate the adaptation of a phase imaging method on the robotic tomography platform in Saclay. Phase-contrast X-ray imaging is generating growing interest for enhancing the contrast of low-density materials, complementing traditional absorption imaging. Various methods have been developed, particularly those based on the use of a phase modulator to create a reference intensity pattern on the detector. Introducing a sample into the optical path shifts this pattern, enabling the extraction of the phase gradient signal. Depending on the type of modulator used, the pattern can be random (speckle-based techniques) or regular (1D/2D grating interferometry).

Job description

Join Us for an Internship!

As an intern at CEA, you will have the opportunity to work in a world-renowned research environment. Our teams consist of passionate and dedicated experts, providing an ideal setting for learning and collaboration. You will have access to cutting-edge equipment and top-tier research resources to successfully carry out your missions. This project will allow you to contribute to the integration of advanced processing and acquisition approaches in X-ray imaging while developing skills at the intersection of physics, instrumentation, and robotics.

Job Description:

The proposed internship involves:

Studying and comparing various phase-contrast imaging approaches suitable for CEA Saclay’s robotic platform;
Implementing experiments on the platform to experimentally validate selected methods;
Quantitatively evaluating the quality of the obtained images (resolution, sensitivity, signal-to-noise ratio);
Providing recommendations for optimizing the acquisition and tomographic reconstruction workflow.
Depending on your school’s requirements, the specific topics can be discussed.
