General information

Organisation

The French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) is a key player in research, development and innovation in four main areas :
• defence and security,
• nuclear energy (fission and fusion),
• technological research for industry,
• fundamental research in the physical sciences and life sciences.

Drawing on its widely acknowledged expertise, and thanks to its 16000 technicians, engineers, researchers and staff, the CEA actively participates in collaborative projects with a large number of academic and industrial partners.

The CEA is established in ten centers spread throughout France

Division description

The Fundamental Research Division (DRF) of CEA contributes to the advancement of knowledge and technological development, at the highest world level, by conducting research in the fields of physics, chemistry and life sciences. It helps to develop solutions that meet the challenges facing our society, in the service of all the CEA's missions. The DRF employs more than 6,000 people in 10 institutes. Collaboration with other research organisations and universities, in particular through joint research units, is central to the DRF.

Description de l'unité

The Institute for Integrative Biology of THE ceLL (I2BC) (https://www.i2bc.paris-saclay.fr/) is a joint research unit (UMR 9198), one of the 4 research entities of the DRF's Frédéric Joliot Institute of Life Sciences.
The I2BC brings together 650 staff from the CEA, CNRS and Université Paris-Saclay. Its aim is to characterise how the cell functions and, in particular, to understand the molecular processes that govern the organisation and overall physiology of the cell and its interactions with the environment. The I2BC's teams have access to technological platforms offering high-level services in the fields of genomics, biophysics, structural biology, proteomics, imaging and integrative bioinformatics.

The engineer will work on the biophysics platform, in close collaboration with the Membrane Bioenergetics and Stress (LBMS) and Photobiology, Photosynthesis and Photocatalysis (PPP) teams, which are affiliated with this platform. To carry out their research at the interface between physics and biology, the researchers in these 2 teams place a strong emphasis on original methodological developments.
The I2BC's biophysics platform has the following cutting-edge equipment:
- Spectrometers (3 FTIR, 5 Raman and 2 FT-Raman) interfaced with different detectors, covering the near to far infrared; two confocal microscopes for Raman microscopy.
- An FTIR set-up interfaced to a laser for time-resolved measurements (~ 100 ns).
- Femtosecond to second transient absorption spectros

Job description

As an engineer, you will work on the I2BC's biophysics platform, which provides access to optical spectroscopy methods, in close collaboration with the Membrane Bioenergetics and Stress (LBMS) and Photobiology, Photosynthesis and Photocatalysis (PPP) teams, which are affiliated with this platform. The spectroscopic set-ups are part of the IBiSA labelled platform (Infrastructures in Biology, Health and Agronomy) and the FRISBI infrastructure (French Infrastructure for Integrated Structural Biology). The Île-de-France Sud node of FRISBI is responsible in particular for advanced spectroscopy and the development of original methods for analysing the mechanisms governing the activity of living organisms.

You will be responsible for the day-to-day management of vibrational and electronic spectroscopy equipment (3 FTIR, 5 Raman, 2 transient absorption and 1 time-resolved Raman). You will be involved in the design and installation of experimental equipment, and will be responsible for its maintenance. You will also be responsible for monitoring experiments and participating in the future development of methodologies.

In more detail, your activities will be as follows:

- Participating in the platform's R&D activities

- Carrying out and monitoring electronic and vibrational spectroscopy measurements

- Helping and assisting with experiments, training students and users

- Drafting technical procedures

- Checking equipment operation

- Instrument maintenance, interaction with suppliers

- Participating in the scientific life of the platform and teams.

Applicant Profile

With a degree from an engineering school or equivalent expertise, with or without a PhD, you have solid knowledge of vibrational spectroscopy (FTIR and Raman) and absorption/fluorescence spectroscopy and are familiar with scientific instrumentation (lasers, oscilloscopes, detectors, etc.).

The following skills are required

- English language: B2-C1

- Experience with cryogenics.

- Experience in handling biological samples.

- Knowledge of time-resolved techniques.

- Good knowledge/understanding of optics and electronics would be a major asset! Application pack: CV, cover letter and letter of recommendation

To be sent to direction@i2bc.paris-saclay.fr before 2024/05/31.
