Vacancy details

General information

Organisation

The French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) is a key player in research, development and innovation in four main areas :
• defence and security,
• nuclear energy (fission and fusion),
• technological research for industry,
• fundamental research in the physical sciences and life sciences.

Drawing on its widely acknowledged expertise, and thanks to its 16000 technicians, engineers, researchers and staff, the CEA actively participates in collaborative projects with a large number of academic and industrial partners.

The CEA is established in ten centers spread throughout France

Description de l'unité

The CEA is at the heart of society's challenges, particularly the energy transition. In this field, cutting-edge research is being carried out at the Institut de Recherche sur la Fusion par Confinement Magnétique (IRFM), whose aim is to develop a sustainable, environmentally-friendly energy source based on the use of fusion energy found in stars.
To produce this energy on Earth, we need to heat a medium called plasma to several hundred million degrees in high-tech facilities such as tokamaks. This challenge, rich in industrial and economic prospects, requires major scientific and technological advances that are mobilizing the scientific community. The IRFM operates the WEST tokamak as part of the European fusion program, in preparation for future experiments on the international ITER tokamak currently under construction on the Cadarache site. IRFM researchers, together with their academic partners, are also developing the theoretical and modeling tools needed to understand the phenomena at the heart of fusion plasmas, while engineers and technicians are working on innovative technologies in fields such as cryomagnetism, high-frequency wave heating and new materials for extracting intense heat fluxes.

Job description

Within the IRFM, the Fusion Plasma Physics Department (SPPF) is responsible for advancing knowledge and understanding of fusion plasmas. As such, it is responsible for:

  • the development of simulation/modeling codes, at various levels of fidelity, needed to understand and predict the phenomena taking place in fusion plasmas;
  • the design and implementation of physics experiments and the interpretation of experimental results on the WEST tokamak and other fusion facilities in Europe and beyond;
  • development and operation of measuring instruments to characterize fusion plasmas and gain access to key phenomena.

To carry out these missions, the SPPF currently relies on a staff of around 90 (all statuses combined) organized into 4 groups, and on a network of collaborations in France and abroad.

As head of the SPPF, and with a wealth of experience in the field of hot and magnetized plasma physics, you will guide, organize and lead the activities of your department to meet the Institute's objectives.

As such, you will have the following responsibilities:

  • As a member of the IRFM management team, you will participate in the development of the Institute's strategy and management,
  • You will develop and implement this strategy within your department (seeking budgets, establishing collaborations, etc.),
  • On a day-to-day basis, you manage and coordinate the department's activities, supported by a management team (4 people) and group leaders. This includes preparing and monitoring the proper execution of the department's budget, tracking milestones and deliverables under the department's responsibility, as well as defining and monitoring the department's employment and training plans.

Applicant Profile

PhD in science.

Experience required: at least 7 years in an international scientific environment.

Technical and/or specific skills: experience in team management is required, as well as knowledge of plasma physics.

Experience in coordinating scientific projects is desirable.

In line with CEA's commitment to the integration of disabled people, this position is open to all. The CEA offers accommodation and/or organizational possibilities for the integration of disabled workers.
