General information
Organisation
The French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) is a key player in research, development and innovation in four main areas :
• defence and security,
• nuclear energy (fission and fusion),
• technological research for industry,
• fundamental research in the physical sciences and life sciences.
Drawing on its widely acknowledged expertise, and thanks to its 16000 technicians, engineers, researchers and staff, the CEA actively participates in collaborative projects with a large number of academic and industrial partners.
The CEA is established in ten centers spread throughout France

Job description
Will you be up to the challenge ? Understand, model, and predict the microstructural features of 1:12-type (SmFe₁₂) permanent magnets to optimize their performance.
The LMCM (Laboratory of Magnetic Materials and Components) is seeking a postdoctoral researcher for a 12-month contract to work on the following topic: multi-scale modelling and artificial intelligence for permanent magnets with low rare-earth content.
This postdoctoral position is part of the project PEPR and aims to accelerate the design of new rare-earth-reduced permanent magnets based on SmFe₁₂ phases. The work will focus on the development of multiscale modeling approaches combining micromagnetic simulations and artificial intelligence. The successful candidate will develop image analysis tools to extract microstructural descriptors from experimental data, as well as generative models to produce realistic microstructures. These microstructures will feed into a micromagnetic solver to study magnetization reversal mechanisms and optimize magnetic properties. The project relies on experimental data acquired at CEA and involves close collaboration with European academic partners (Krems, Vienna, Austria).
Applicant Profile
What you bring to the table :
· PhD in materials science, solid-state physics, magnetism, or numerical modelling, with a strong focus on materials simulation (micromagnetics, finite element methods, or multiscale approaches).
· Key technical skills: strong proficiency in Python and scientific computing, experience in numerical modelling (finite elements, micromagnetics, or equivalent methods), and knowledge of machine learning (particularly image analysis and/or generative models). Experience with simulation tools (e.g., COMSOL, in-house codes) and microstructural data processing is highly desirable.
Soft skills: autonomy, scientific rigor and critical thinking, ability to work at the interface between modelling, data, and experiments, strong interest in collaborative work within an international environment, and good written and oral communication skills.
What we offer :
· In the heart of the Alps, an exceptional and internationally recognised scientific ecosystem, in a city committed to the environmental transition "Grenoble European Green Capital 2022",
· A balance between private and professional life (50 days off/year), an active Works Council for leisure and extra-professional activities,
· Minimum salary according to your qualifications and experience,
· Industrial-grade facilities for research,
· Participation to scientific conferences,
· Training to strengthen your skills or acquire new ones.
