The French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) is a key player in research, development and innovation in four main areas :

Division description
The Fundamental Research Division (DRF) contributes to the advancement of knowledge and technological development, at the highest world level, by conducting research in the fields of physics, chemistry and life sciences. It helps to develop solutions that meet the challenges facing our society, in the service of all the CEA's missions. The DRF employs more than 6,000 people in 10 institutes. Collaboration with other research organisations and universities, in particular through joint research units, is central to the DRF.

The Institute for Integrative Biology of the Cell (I2BC) (https://www.i2bc.paris-saclay.fr) is one of the 4 research units of the DRF's Frédéric Joliot Institute of Life Sciences, which groups together the life sciences teams on the Paris-Saclay campus, attached to the CEA Paris-Saclay/Saclay centre.
The aim of the I2BC (650 people) is to understand the molecular processes that govern the organisation and physiology of the cell and its interactions. The I2BC includes high-level platforms in omics, structural biology and biophysics. In biophysics, the platform consists of a set of spectroscopies, particularly suited to the study of photosynthesis.
Photosynthesis research at the I2BC concerns the mechanisms and regulations governing the capture of solar energy and the reduction of atmospheric CO2 by microalgae and plants. The I2BC teams are studying the mechanisms of acclimation to light and increased atmospheric CO2 concentration using a wide range of approaches, from the molecular level to the whole plant, combining mutants, biochemistry and spectroscopy. Their work aims to understand how light absorption, electronic transfer and CO2 capture are integrated, control the resilience and efficiency of photosynthesis, and protect the photosynthetic apparatus against photo-oxidative stress. From a societal point of view, this research holds out the hope of designing or selecting photosynthetic organisms that are more robust or more efficient at capturing CO2.

Within the Department of Biophysics, Biochemistry and Structural Biology, as a researcher in the field of photosynthesis, and more specifically on the primary processes, you will set up a research activity and ensure its continuity by applying to various national and international calls (ANR, EU, etc...) to finance your research and recruit students and post-docs.
Job description:
- Develop a research topic on photosynthesis in higher plants, algae or cyanobacteria that is complementary to the research currently carried out in the unit. This research theme should concern the regulation of light absorption, electron transfer and CO2 capture, and be based on broad interdisciplinary approaches (molecular biology, physiology, biochemistry, biophysics). Your topic should aim to understand these fundamental processes at the molecular level, and/or the processes involved in regulating/optimizing them.
- Contribute to the visibility of this research at national and international level.
- Participate in the I2BC's scientific strategy, in particular in the area of "Bio-inspired engineering for energy, health and the environment".
- Participate in CEA programs relevant to this topic
- Integrate your research into the context of climate change, with a view to improving the use of solar energy and CO2 capture by organisms.
Applicant Profile
Education/experience:
With a PhD and minimum one PostDoc on photosynthesis you are an experienced researcher trained in an international context. Having experience in supervising PhD students it is expected that you set up an independent research team in the relevant field in the near future at the I2BC.
