General information

CEA (logo)

Organisation

The French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) is a key player in research, development and innovation in four main areas :
• defence and security,
• nuclear energy (fission and fusion),
• technological research for industry,
• fundamental research in the physical sciences and life sciences.

Drawing on its widely acknowledged expertise, and thanks to its 16000 technicians, engineers, researchers and staff, the CEA actively participates in collaborative projects with a large number of academic and industrial partners.

The CEA is established in ten centers spread throughout France

Description de l'unité

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have become the standard technology for energy storage due to their high energy density and efficiency. However, several key challenges remain, including improving energy density, power output, and most importantly, ensuring the safety of these batteries. One promising solution to address these challenges is the development of solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs), which can potentially eliminate the safety risks associated with liquid electrolytes, such as leakage or short circuits.
While existing solid polymer electrolytes based on polyethylene oxide (PEO) offer some performance advantages, they show significant limitations, especially at lower temperatures. Similarly, block copolymers, which are explored for better control over nanostructured ion transport pathways, face challenges related to ionic mobility and the precise control of nanostructures.

Job description

Internship Objectives:

The main objective of this internship is to contribute to the development of innovative hybrid solid polymer electrolytes for high-performance lithium-ion batteries. A critical aspect of the project involves characterizing the electrochemical properties of these new hybrid electrolytes. This includes measuring their ionic conductivity, stability, and performance across a range of temperatures. These tests will be conducted using specific coin cell configurations and will include voltametric and galvanostatic tests on metallic and composite electrodes. Impedance and transference number measurements will also be carried out. The intern will work closely with electrochemistry experts from Liten-DEHT-STB in preparing and testing these assemblies.

Research Approach:

The project will be carried out in close collaboration between two research teams with complementary expertise:

Liten : The intern will work under the guidance of Liten-DEHT-STB researchers for the electrochemical characterization of the hybrid electrolytes. The intern will gain hands-on experience in coin-cell assembling, battery testing, understanding how material properties translate into device performance.
SyMMES: A part of the internship will involve collaboration with SyMMES researchers, that develop hybrid electrolytes. The lab has strong experience in nanostructured materials and advanced techniques for membrane preparation and characterization.

Applicant Profile

Stage BAC+5

The ideal candidate should have:

·  Background in electrochemistry, materials science, or chemical engineering, with a strong interest in energy storage technologies.

·  Knowledge of polymer chemistry and solid-state electrolytes

·  Strong analytical skills and the ability to work in a multidisciplinary environment.

·  Excellent teamwork and communication skills for collaboration between teams.
