EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCHER IN THE HIGH INTENSITY PHYSICS GROUP - LIDYL - H/F

Vacancy details

General information

Organisation

The French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) is a key player in research, development and innovation in four main areas :
• defence and security,
• nuclear energy (fission and fusion),
• technological research for industry,
• fundamental research in the physical sciences and life sciences.

Drawing on its widely acknowledged expertise, and thanks to its 16000 technicians, engineers, researchers and staff, the CEA actively participates in collaborative projects with a large number of academic and industrial partners.

The CEA is established in ten centers spread throughout France

Division description

The Directorate for Fundamental Research (DRF), implemented on all civilian centers of the CEA, has as its main objective to undertake fundamental research in relation to the missions of the CEA in the fields of physics, chemistry and life sciences, in which its excellence is internationally recognized.

Description de l'unité

The Interactions, Dynamics and Lasers Laboratory (LIDYL), which is part of the Institut Rayonnement Matière de Saclay (IRAMIS) of the CEA and which hosts the CNRS-CEA EMR9000, conducts fundamental research on laser-matter interaction in the very short time and Ultra-High-Intensity (UHI) regime. The LIDYL manages in particular the state-of-the-art platforms ATTOLab-Orme (dedicated to studies of ultrafast dynamics in gas and solid phase at femtosecond and attosecond scales) and UHI100 (relativistic optics, radiation generation and particle acceleration). This second facility consists of a 100TW Titanium-Sapphire laser and an experimental room whose geometry and equipment were optimised when the new premises were built at the Orme des Merisiers site. A state-of-the-art technological installation, UHI100 will offer two intense, synchronised ultra-high contrast laser beams. This configuration will enable a wide range of experiments to be carried out in the fields of relativistic optics on plasma mirrors and laser particle acceleration in dense and sub-dense environments.

Executive

Job description

Within the PHI group of LIDYL and in connection with the other scientists of the group, the person recruited will carry out a high level scientific experimental activity, exploiting the assets of the UHI100 platform of LIDYL, without excluding the use of other experimental platforms, and in particular PW type installations in France or abroad. This experimental activity will be supported by the PHI group's numerical team for the predictive part of the experimental results and/or their interpretation. The scientist recruited will actively build research projects in response to national and European calls for tenders in order to ensure the financing of his/her scientific activity and to contribute to the maintenance and/or evolution of the UHI100 platform. In this perspective, he/she will be able to forge links with the national and international scientific communities concerned and with the various industrial players in the field. He/she will actively participate in the scientific life of the group and in the training of young scientists (trainees, PhD students and post-doctoral fellows). He/she will work within the framework of the CEA's missions.

The tasks of the post holder are as follows:

- To develop an original high-level experimental scientific activity in the field of ultra-high intensity laser-matter interaction that exploits not only the performance of the UHI100 laser platform but also that of other state-of-the-art laser facilities (Apollon, ELI-ERIC, CoReLS, ...).

- Respond to national and international calls for tenders in order to contribute to the sustainability of the funding of the scientific activity.

- To develop national and international collaborations.

- To work within the framework of the CEA's missions and in conjunction with other research organisations.

- To participate actively in the scientific life of the group and in the supervision and training of young students, PhD students and non-permanent researchers.

Applicant Profile

The candidate should have good experience in ultra high intensity laser-matter interaction on one or more multi TW class laser facilities or higher.

The candidate should have a PhD thesis in laser-matter interaction physics.

He/she should be a motivated, passionate, reactive experimental physicist.

The candidate must be a team player, have good writing and communication skills in English and be able to ensure the visibility of his/her activity on an international scale.

Selection procedure:

You must apply via the CEA website: https://www.emploi.cea.fr/ and by sending a full application to jobs.lidyl@cea.fr.
The application file will include :
- a CV ;
- a list of titles and works (publications, conferences, prizes, etc.) including a brief description of the most outstanding personal achievements (conceptual, technical, etc.);
- a letter of motivation;

- a research project (10 pages maximum) over 5 years detailing in particular how it would reinforce and/or complement the programmes of the IHP group;

- contact details of 3 references who may be contacted in the event of pre-selection.

A shortlist of candidates will be drawn up for a hearing by an advisory selection committee in january 2023.

 Application deadline: 31/12/2022 - 23:59 CEST.
