Within the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA), the Laboratory for Electronics and Information Technology (LETI) works with companies to increase their competitiveness through technological innovation and transfers. CEA LETI is focused on micro- and nano-technologies and their applications, from wireless devices and systems, to biology and healthcare or photonics.

Within CEA LETI, the Wireless Broadband System Laboratory is involved in research activities related to 5G, 5G+, and 6G radio communication systems, spanning through channel coding, modulation and associated transmitter/receiver design, radio access protocols, and network resource management and orchestration. The main applications are the evolutions of cellular networks, satellite communications, or optical wireless communications (LiFi). The particularity of the laboratory is to gather experts in signal and information processing, digital communications and optimization techniques, as well as people working on hardware and software implementation on custom targets. This diversity allows the realization of advanced prototypes necessary for the validation and valorisation of the carried out work. In parallel, the laboratory has a strong publishing and intellectual property creation activity. It also leads or takes part in many R&D French, European, and international collaborative projects and has strong links with the ICT industry.

5G+ and 6G networks revolution will be characterized by ubiquitous connection availability, very dense networks in terms of number of users and access points, ultralow latency, very high bandwidth, and energetic efficiency. In particular, four key elements of the 5G+ and 6G scientific and technological development are:
1.Very fast and reliable information transmission, enabling ultra-reliable and lowlatency communications (URLLC) for especially delay-sensitive applications.
2.The availability of data processing and storage capabilities at the mobile edge of the network, in a paradigm called edge cloud and computing.
3.Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications with high-frequency radio signals, including millimeter-wave (mmWave) for radio access in mobile environments.
4.The design of new network architectures, characterized by a high adaptability and flexibility, which will leverage multi-connectivity and novel wireless communication solutions, like reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS).

Future network nodes and devices will also be endowed with learning and decisionmaking capabilities through artificial intelligence and machine learning, so that they efficiently and autonomously optimize their activities and responses to environment changes.

In such a context, the heterogeneity of resources, network elements, and applications poses new challenges to develop innovative mechanisms for the joint optimization of radio, computation, and storage resource allocation, subject to strict performance and quality-of-service constraints. Moreover, the design of 5G+ and 6G networks will have to target sustainability and energy efficiency, since their impact on the planet’s energy consumption is foreseen to drastically increase in the next decade. CEA LETI is looking for a full-time researcher to investigate the research topics introduced above.

In particular, the offered job will consist in:
• Carrying out research activities in the domain of heterogeneous resource allocation for 5G+ and 6G networks, in collaboration with other members of the laboratory and with the goal of finding innovative solutions that go beyond SOTA.
• Theoretically analysing and mathematically modelling new resource allocation problems to answer the needs of 5G+ and 6G applications and tackle their induced challenges.
• Devising novel optimization algorithms and resource allocation schemes for the solution of the investigated problems, especially aiming at energy efficiency and sustainability under system performance constraints (on latency, reliability, electromagnetic emission, etc.), assuming the use of RIS.
• Evaluating the proposed solutions through numerical simulations and possibly contributing to the development of proofs of concepts and testbeds.
• Valorising research results through publications in top-quality journals and conferences, as well as protecting the intellectual property developed during the research work with patent filing.

Profil du candidat

Applicants must have:

• A PhD degree in telecommunications engineering or similar fields.
• A passion for theoretical and practical problems in the domain of digital communications and mobile networks; an experience on 5G networks would be highly appreciated.
• Problem-solving skills through mathematical modelling and/or numerical simulations.
• A solid publication track record in one or more of the following topics: heterogeneous resource allocation for 5G and 5G+ networks, mobile edge computing, dynamic/stochastic optimization in telecommunication-related problems, network architecture design, physicallayer solutions for digital communications.
• The capability to conjugate autonomous and independent work with team cooperation.
• A deep knowledge of one or more programming languages or simulation software (Matlab,Python, C, C++,…).
• Excellent English writing and speaking skills.

The following are also welcome:
• Experience in collaborative/European projects.
• Knowledge of machine learning and artificial intelligence tools.
• French writing and speaking skills.
