Within LETI, the Systems Department (DSYS) designs, implements and integrates innovative system functions for industrial, consumer, scientific, space, security or defense applications that use emerging or newly emerging technologies, micro-and nanotechnologies, but also skills, know-how and technologies relating in particular to: radio transmissions, telecommunications, antennas and antenna systems, system and component safety, sensors / actuators and electronic sensors, sensor systems and networks, analog and digital electronics and associated signal and information processing, magnetometry, metrology and the exploitation of weak magnetic fields, remote power, recovery and energy management.

Description de l'offre

Our lab works on optically pumped magnetometers (OPM) based on helium-4 metastable atoms. Our main achievement in last years has been the design and space qualification of the most advanced OPMs available for spatial exploration, which were launched on ESA Swarm mission [1].

 With this very same species, we have developed OPMs for medical imaging of brain (magneto-encephalography – MEG) and heart (magneto-cardiography – MCG), which have the advantage of operating at room temperature, with no heating or cooling. The development of these two imaging techniques is an opportunity to better understand and diagnose pathologies like epilepsy, Alzheimer or arrhythmia.

A few years ago we performed proof of concept measurements of both MCG and MEG with primitive versions of our sensors [2,3]. After getting a better understanding of our sensors physics [4] and implementing substantial improvements, we are now developing arrays of OPMs and collaborating with several clinical teams in order to test and improve them for different applications and environments.

We are hiring an engineer who will to contribute to the development of OPM arrays. This position will focus on the deployment of OPM arrays in the clinical environments where they are going to be tested by our partner medical research teams, notably in cardiology. The candidate should be able to deploy and operate the sensors in a clinical complex environment, solve the practical issues, and bring feedback on all kind of improvements that are needed to improve the recordings. He or she will also participate in the implementation of some of these improvements, and their tests in lab environment.

This work is aimed at bringing this technology to the medical imaging market, in collaboration with a start-up currently prepared by CEA-Leti. It will be carried out in a multidisciplinary team, composed of researchers, experienced engineers, as well as PhD students and post-docs.

Profil du candidat

The applicant should hold an engineering degree and have some skills in optics and instrumentation. He or she should like working with varied teams of both engineers and clinical researchers, in a challenging and fast-paced project. Our lab is well equipped and staff engineers will be available to help the candidate in the most critical subjects, like sensor electronics. The results of this work will be divulgated in form both of journal publications and of patents.

Skills relative to FPGA development and hardware testing would be deemed very valuable :
- Work with the FPGA developers to ensure the released firmwares comply with the performance objectives
o Knowledge of the Vivado series of tools (VHDL design, Simulation, …) would be an asset
or/and
o Track down bugs and technical problems
o Perform hardware/firmware testing
- Integration of the manufactured boards and test in hardware using custom Python scripts
